First Class Room 9: Change and Continuity in Saggart

Room 9 have been looking at change and continuity this week in Saggart Village for History. We learned that change is change and means that something different happens. We learned that when there is continuity in something it means that it stays the same. As historians we examined an old photo of Main Street in Saggart. We then went to visit the same scene and took a photograph with our eyes. We discovered that there was some continuity in the village and that some things had stayed the same. For example the walls, trees and church were present now and also 3 years ago when the old photo was take. We also discovered that some things had changed in the villages, in particular the foot bridge in the photo below. We are now going to try to discover why this bridge was removed. Senior Infants Room 4: The Post Office

We loved learning all about the Post Office. We had great fun writing and delivering  letters, all around the school, during playtime. In maths, we learned about heavy and light parcels. We learned how to use a balance weighing scales, it reminded us of a see-saw. We read a story called the Jolly Postman and learned about all the different Fairytales in the story. We enjoyed listening to some Fairytale songs by “Debbie and Friends” during lunchtime. Here is a link to the channel.  Our trip to the Post Office was amazing! We had so much fun walking down to the shopping centre, seeing the postbox and handing in our letters. Then we got to go underground and into the secret room with all the security Guards. They allowed each of us have a turn controlling the cameras. A big thank you to Edelle’s Mother and Grandmother for coming on the trip with us. Have a look at our pictures...

Junior Infants Room 2: Green fingers and Caterpillars!

Room 2 set up their very own Garden Centre last month in the classroom! They became gardeners, shop keepers and customers, bought and sold lots of plants, and even planted their own Irises! They are taking great care of them in school, and hope that they will grow if they give them all the things that living things need to grow, including water, food (soil), light and clean air. They learnt all about the different parts of the plant, including the seeds, petals, stem, roots and made their own flowers using lots of different materials. Room 2 really enjoyed reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar,  and talking about all the food he ate on each of the seven days of the week, before he turned into a beautiful butterfly! Ask them to sing you their song about the life cycle of the butterfly! Room 2 also painted tonal caterpillars – making light and darker tones of colour by adding black and white to their paint. They printed beautiful colourful butterflies too and wrote their names on them- they are becoming so independent! Room 2 also read and acted out the story of The Enormous Turnip, and took part in a taste test in school, where they tried turnip chips, crisps, and mash. They decided that they liked turnip mash most of all! The room 2 mathematicians have also been learning about capacity – how much a container can hold. They have been using lots of new special maths words- like ‘estimate’, ‘pour’, ‘full’ and ‘empty’, ‘most’ and ‘least’. They have been doing lots of experimenting with water, soil, sand, and...

Senior Infants Room 7: Making Butter

Senior Infants have been learning all about the farm. We can tell you some of the places farm animals live (like a stable, pig sty or chicken coop) and the names of baby farm animals (calf, lamb, foal, chick, piglet). We have been learning about what farming was like many years ago …and we have discovered it was very difficult! The farmers had to milk the cows by hand and plough the fields themselves. They even made their own milk and butter. To see what this would be like we decided to make our own butter. After tasting it on crackers we decided that it tasted……YUM! Check out the pictures to see what we...
