Senior Infants Room 7: School Tour 2017

Senior Infants Room 7: School Tour 2017

Last Friday Senior Infants had their school tour to Lullymore farm in Kildare.  The sun was shining and we were ready to have fun! Among our favourite activities of the day were playing crazy golf in the playground, riding a train around the entire park, and seeing the baby animals. We even met an alpaca! Our teacher’s favourite activity was fairy-spotting in the fairy village……. Senior Infants had a fantastic day. A special mention of thanks must be given to our two brilliant parent volunteers, Karol and Valerie. Check out some pictures of us...

Senior Infants Room 7: Making Butter

Senior Infants have been learning all about the farm. We can tell you some of the places farm animals live (like a stable, pig sty or chicken coop) and the names of baby farm animals (calf, lamb, foal, chick, piglet). We have been learning about what farming was like many years ago …and we have discovered it was very difficult! The farmers had to milk the cows by hand and plough the fields themselves. They even made their own milk and butter. To see what this would be like we decided to make our own butter. After tasting it on crackers we decided that it tasted……YUM! Check out the pictures to see what we...

Senior Infants Room 7: Waterproof materials

Uh-oh! Ted has a hole in his coat and will get wet in the rain! I wonder would Room 7 be able to make him a new coat? We tested a variety of different materials to see which ones are waterproof and which are not. We discovered that the water soaked through paper, tissue, cloth, cotton and sponge. But the water just ran off the plastic and tin foil – this means that they are waterproof! Room 7 love experiments and developing our scientific skills like predicting, observing, testing, recording and evaluating. Look at some pictures of our experiment...
Senior Infants Room 7: World Book Day

Senior Infants Room 7: World Book Day

Room 7 had great fun dressing up as our favourite characters for World Book Day. There was Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Superman, Tinkerbell, Harry Potter, Rainbow Dash, Dorothy of Oz and many more! There was loads of fun literacy activities throughout the day. We had a fashion show, read a new story called ‘Whatever Next’ and even got to choose a new book to take home at the ‘bring a book/buy a book’ sale.  One of our favourite parts of the day was listening to a real life Stickman read us a story….. Room 7 love to read! Have a look at some photos we...
Senior Infants Room 7: Trip to the Post Office

Senior Infants Room 7: Trip to the Post Office

Room 7 have been busy bees learning all about the Post Office this month. We have learned about the people who work in the Post Office and we have been using lots of new vocabulary in the role-play centre like parcel, letter, stamp, envelope, first class, air mail, cashier, address and postman. We have learned to weigh parcels and letters to ensure the correct stamp is given and we learned a new rhyme called ‘The Postman’! In addition, we have really enjoyed reading a story about the Jolly Postman. The Jolly Postman had a busy job delivering letters to lots of our favourite story characters – Cinderella, Goldilocks, the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. We liked this story so much that we decided to write our own letters and postcards. Then we were lucky enough to get the chance to visit the Post Office in Citywest Shopping Centre to post the letters we carefully wrote. We can’t wait until they arrive! Have a look at some pictures we took...
Senior Infants Room 7: Science Week 2016

Senior Infants Room 7: Science Week 2016

Last week was science week in our school and Room 7 were lucky enough to participate in lots of exciting experiments with Dr. David Fitzpatrick. First, we put on lab coats and goggles. We felt like real scientists! Our first investigation involved testing food for starch. We discovered that when iodine was added to cornflakes and bread the food turned black. This indicated that starch was present, meaning these foods give us lots of energy. Then we tested different drinks for protein – 7up, orange juice, milk and water.  The milk turned purple straight away so we knew it contained loads of protein. This is why we drink milk to make us big and strong. The next day we wrote a procedure telling someone how to test a food for starch. We are getting really good at using procedural language like first, then, and finally. During science week we also got learn lots of things about our body and our senses. We have 5 senses – do you think you can name them? We played lots of fun games exploring our senses – check out the photos to see...
