Junior Infants Room 2: C-C-Community!

Over the last month, Room 2 have been learning all about the community – the people and place where they live. They talked about all the different people who help them in their school community and their local community, including secretaries, garbage collectors, teachers, nurses, mechanics, vets, police men and women, and shop keepers. They also had a visit from two firefighters, who taught them all about fire safety and even let them try on their firefighting gear! They loved playing in the Doctor’s surgery, using all of their special medical instruments and words, and sang and acted out lots of related rhymes including Miss Polly and Doctor Foster. They did a fantastic job of acting out and ordering their new story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt as well. Room 2 have also been learning all about their bodies- how to make them grow strong, keep them safe, and how to draw them by using different lines and shapes! They made wonderful x-ray prints of their arms and hands in Art, and really enjoyed tracing around eachothers bodies in PE, and comparing their heights in Maths by making a height chart- have a look at them at work (and play!) here. Well done Room 2, you are Super Stars...

Second Class Room 11: Getting to Grips with Gymnastics and Other Activities

What’s new in Second Class? Second Class have really been enjoying their PE classes for the past week, as we are learning all sorts of new moves! From stretching and flexibility exercises, to the tuck ‘n’ roll and walking the beam, the whole class has been getting involved. We have also started 2017 off on the right note, learning two whole songs in our first week back. ‘The Green Machine’ and ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ are great fun to sing and act out. We especially like all the sound effects in ‘The Green Machine,’ even though we’re still trying to figure out what kind of machine it is! In History we have been learning about Alexander Graham Bell; a famous Scot who invented the first telephone. We saw pictures of some of the first telephones ever made and compared them to the phones we have now. We took a vote on the phone we would prefer and the smartphone won hands down- no surprises there! Check back soon to follow our learning in Room...

First Class Room 8: 3D Shape Orienteering

We has such a fun day doing 3D Shape Orienteering in Room 8! We have been learning about 3D shapes all week, and so, we were given this exciting challenge to see just how much we have learned. As it turns out, we know quite a lot! We now know that: 1. a face is the flat surface of a shape. 2. an edge is the line where two faces meet 3. a vertices is when three or more faces meet, quite like a corner. In groups of three we set off around the class looking for coloured cones. Under each cone was a 3D shape riddle  which we had to solve before the time ran out. Why don’t you have try at one of our riddles? I have 6 faces, four of them are rectangular, two of them are square. What shape am I?  The answer is….. CUBOID! Congratulations to Ava, Evan and Arshmann who won. They had all of the correct answers in the fastest time. Click here to view some...

First Class Room 9: Capital B

Today Room 9 learned how to write capital B. We already knew how to write small b. Capital letters are used at the start of every sentence and for every boy, girl, mammy and daddy, aunt and uncle! To learn capital B we first used sand trays. The feeling of the sand running between our fingers is such fun! After plenty of practice using the sand trays we tried writing a few sentences beginning with capital B in our writing copies! We did fantastic work as you will see from the pictures below! For more photos please see...

Junior Infants Room 5: A visit from the Fire Station!

We hope everyone enjoyed our Winter Concert today! Looking at all of the pictures from throughout the year was lots of fun and reminded us of all of the brilliant learning we have done this term. Before we finish the term we wanted to share our visit from the firemen with you all. The two firemen came in to our school after a long nightshift – thank you very much! We learned lots of facts about fire safety, including what to do if there is a fire in our house. We all brought home our fire safety packs and planned an escape route in our houses with our families. This is very important because lots of fires happen in the night time when it is dark. Then, the firemen let us try on their band new gear – this protects them when they are fighting fires! To check out our pictures of the firemen’s visit click here. We hope you have a lovely holiday and to our families celebrating Christmas – Happy Christmas from Room...
