Junior Infants Room 3: Reading Aloud by Bronagh

We had a great start to Literacy Week with Bronagh, Alannah Cheetham’s Mom, reading us a story this morning.  She read ‘The Highway Rat’ by Julia Donaldson.  The boys and girls really enjoyed listening to the book and couldn’t believe how evil the rat was, stealing from all of the other animals.  We also enjoyed predicting what would happen to the rat after the story finished.  Thank you...

Senior Infants Room 5: The Telephone

In Room 5 today we were talking about the telephone. We learnt that the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The first phone call ever made was made by Alexander to his assistant who was in the room next door! We made our own telephones using paper cups, string and sellotape. We discovered that we could hear our elbow buddy better when the string was pulled tight. We had telephone conversations sitting down, standing up, under the table and far away from our elbow buddy. Senior Infants Room 5: Pancake Tuesday

We had such a busy day making pancakes today! We all went to the staff room, even Barnaby Bear came along. Keep an eye out for him in some of the photos! Ms Harney asked us if we could name any of the ingredients needed to make pancakes. We learnt that you need flour, eggs and milk to make pancake batter. Ms Harney showed us how to pour the batter onto the hot plate and make a circle. It was tricky to flip the pancakes! We picked our own toppings. We could pick raspberry jam, banana or sugar. Most boys and girls picked sugar. Please click here to see some more...

Junior Infants Room 3: Green Fingers!

We have had the Garden Centre in our role-play area since the beginning of February and have been learning lots about plants and flowers.  We have learned how to grow plants so last week we decided to try and grow some sunflowers and pumpkins.  This is how we did it: Put lots of soil in a pot and press it down with your fingers. Water the soil using a watering can so that it is moist. Place the seed in the middle of the pot. Cover the seed with some more dry soil. Water the seeds everyday. We are hoping to see little green leaves grow soon.  The sunflowers should come out in July or August and the pumpkins should be ready to pick in September or October.  The boys and girls will take their pots home at the summer holidays and continue to take care of them. We also planted some cress seeds which grow much quicker.  The boys and girls were very excited to see some little green shoots appearing from these this evening. Junior Infants Room 2: Materials

This month, the children in room 2 have been exploring the properties and characteristics of different materials in science by investigating whether different types of materials, such as paper, plastic, cardboard, and tinfoil, are waterproof or not. In visual arts, the children have also been exploring fabric and fibre by creating patterns and textures on clothes. Examples of their work can be seen in the pictures below. It was has been wonderful to see them integrate their learning in both of these areas over the last few weeks....
