Junior Infants Room 5: World Book Day

As you know, we celebrated World Book Day last week. World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading.   Did you know that it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. We love books in Room 5, with our favourites being the Gruffalo and our new book, The Smartest Giant in Town! Check out all of our different costumes here. Can you spot any familiar...

Junior Infants Room 5: The School

Room 5 have been enjoying our new topic – The School! The role play area has been a particular favourite in this topic, with the children role playing different members of school staff (Miss Mahon has been very impressed with our impressions). Below you can see some children role playing taking the rolla and doing a fire drill.   We have been building schools using our giant Lego: We have also been exploring patterns in Maths. We used our new learning to create colourful patterned new school jumpers. I wonder if Ms Doherty would like them?   In Geography we have been discussing the different spaces in our school and what they are used for. We even had a go at creating maps of the P.E. hall. During SPHE time we have spent a lot of time thinking about friendship and how important it is. We have opened up about our feelings when we have no one to play with. It sure can be lonely. We don’t want anyone in our class to feel sad so we are making sure that we are all good friends and that no one gets left behind in the playground. Miss Mahon thinks we are all fantastic at being good friends....

Junior Infants Room 5: A visit from the Fire Station!

We hope everyone enjoyed our Winter Concert today! Looking at all of the pictures from throughout the year was lots of fun and reminded us of all of the brilliant learning we have done this term. Before we finish the term we wanted to share our visit from the firemen with you all. The two firemen came in to our school after a long nightshift – thank you very much! We learned lots of facts about fire safety, including what to do if there is a fire in our house. We all brought home our fire safety packs and planned an escape route in our houses with our families. This is very important because lots of fires happen in the night time when it is dark. Then, the firemen let us try on their band new gear – this protects them when they are fighting fires! To check out our pictures of the firemen’s visit click here. We hope you have a lovely holiday and to our families celebrating Christmas – Happy Christmas from Room...

Junior Infants Room 5: I Taste with my Tongue.

Room 5 has been exploring the theme of our senses. We discussed our 5 senses and then had a lesson on each sense, becoming guide dogs during PE and even creating the different noises heard in the city and the countryside. This week we explored our sense of taste by doing a tasting session as a class. We tasted the four main tastes – bitter (natural yoghurt), sour (lemon), sweet (chocolate) and salty (salted rice cakes). Can you guess which one was our favourite? We use our senses to explore the world around us. Learning about our senses allows us to appreciate our them as gifts and to come to an understanding about disability. Doing the blind walk and the taste test allowed to take part in in trust building activities.   We really enjoyed learning about our senses. To check out more pictures of our taste test click...

Junior Infants Room 5: We Are Scientists!

To celebrate national Science Week Room 5 have become scientists! We have been doing lots of scientific thinking and investigations using magnets, exploring different magnetic materials. We have also been discussing the pushing and pulling forces created by magnets. Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from Dr. David Fitzpatrick (Zoe’s Dad) who helped us to conduct experiments. We used iodine to test our favourite foods for starch – this gives us lots of energy. We tested bread, cornflakes and mushrooms. Which ones do you think contained starch? Next, we tested milk, water and 7up for protein. Dr. David explained that protein helps us to grow big and strong. Which one do you think contains protein? Milk of course! Room 5 have learned lots of different skills and week and have had fun being scientists – thank you Dr. David! For more photo’s of us doing our experiments click...
