First Class Room 9: Centenary Video

2016 marks the centenary of The Easter Rising. This uprising was one of the defining moments of the struggle for Irish independence which began on Easter Monday 1916 with the reading of the proclamation, Poblacht na h-Eireann by Pádraig Pearse at the General Post Office (GPO) on Sackville Street (now known as O’Connell Street). It described a vision for an independent Ireland and its hopes and aspirations for a new autonomous free state. To commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, the Government has tasked Óglaigh na hÉireann with delivering a National Flag to every Primary School in the country. Óglaigh na hÉireann gave the children in Citywest & Saggart CNS the task of putting together their very own 2016 Proclamation that would compare the 1916 Proclamation and describe a vision for the next 100 years. To do this we did the following: We learned the Irish National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann off by heart! We studied the 1916 Proclamation, which was challenging, but with the help of our teacher we developed a good understanding about what it was the 1916 Proclamation envisaged for the country. We examined pictures of the 1916 Easter Rising and developed a sense of empathy of what it must have been like for the men, women and children of the country at this difficult time. We came up with four key messages that we felt described best our vision for the next 100 years. We put all our work together into this very special video. Proclamation Day is on 15th March 2016,...

Junior Infants Room 2: Caterpillars, Capacity and Copies

Room 2 have been learning all about caterpillars and the life-cycle of the butterfly over the last two weeks. They read the fantastic story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, painted patterned caterpillars changing the colour from light to dark by mixing in black or white paint, build giant caterpillars and cocoons using their big blocks, and re-created the life-cycle of the butterfly in marla. They learnt a song about the Life-cycle of the Butterfly and put some actions to it, and a nursery rhyme called ‘Mary Mary Quite Contrary’ who grew lots of lovely flowers in her garden. They all chose a favourite flower during circle time – what is your favourite flower? Room 2 are also learning all about capacity, and have been experimenting with different containers to see which ones can hold more or less than others. They are getting really good at ordering containers from empty to full, and have been filling and experimenting with their flower pots and watering cans in the Garden Centre all week! The Junior Infants have gotten so good at their hand-writing and numbers, that they have also begun to use copybooks to keep all their fantastic work in- well done Room 2 on another super week of learning! Check out more pictures of them at work...

First Class Room 9: 1916 Photograph Enquiry

Today Room 9 were investigating photographs from one hundred years ago during history. We looked at pictures of Ireland during the 1916 rising to see what the city was like during this difficult time in our country. We saw the General Post Office (GPO) where the Proclamation was read aloud, Nelson’s Pillar and Sackville Street (now known as O’Connell Street). For more information on the 1916 Easter Rising please click here. We are currently working on our Proclamation for 2016 which we we present to you using video. For photos please click here....

Junior Infants Room 2: Parents, Grandparents and Pancakes!

What a busy fortnight Room 2 have had! They have been having so much fun playing maths games with the parents as part of Maths 4 Fun, and really enjoyed their grandparents’ visit to the school as part of Grandparents day. Room 2 are a very kind and thoughtful class, and decided to make a video of themselves performing their grandparents poem for all the grandparents who couldn’t make it in to visit them- please click here to view it! They were also very kind to the elves in the story of the ‘Elves and the Shoemaker’, and made them amazing little gifts out of different materials- an elf car, helicopter, skateboard, and lots of little hats and jumpers! They celebrated Pancake Tuesday this week and really enjoyed chatting to their friends about what toppings they like best on their pancakes. One of their favourite songs  at the minute is How’s The Weather? and they are currently learning how to do a weather report as Gaeilge! Tá an lá fuair (cold), te (hot), fliuch (wet), tirim (dry)! For more photos of them at work (and play!) please see here 🙂...

Senior Infants Room 7: The Post Office

We had so much fun going to the post office! We saw where you go to buy stamps and how to weigh parcels. The manager of the post office even gave us a lollipop. We loved going on the secret mission into the security room and seeing the cameras and we even got teddy bears. We must be the luckiest senior infants ever! Take a look at photos of our trip here....
