First Class Room 8: Our Constructions

Who knew how much fun building with cardboard and bottles would be! In Room 8, we created incredible constructions. We began the process of building by firstly, looking at some of the statues and sculptures in the Botanic Garden in Glasnevin. Ms Bates showed us pictures from the time she was there. They were so cool! Secondly, in pairs, we planned the constuctions which we wanted to create by drawing up blu-prints. One of us create the Golden Gate Bridge, others created Alien Spaceships. Two children even created a large scale house that we could play in! After spending the following week collecting our materials, we starting constructing. Some aspects were difficult but we got used to cutting, bending and sticking the different types of materials. We are very proud of our finished constructions. Take a look here to see us at...

Senior Infants Room 4: Shadows

We have been learning about shadows in Science this week. We drew our shadows in the yard at little break. When we went back to our shadows at big break we noticed that they had moved! We tested different objects to see if they would make good shadows. Objects that made good shadows included books, cardboard boxes, copies and pieces of paper. These objects are opaque, this means that light cannot pass through them. Objects that do not make good shadows are called translucent as some light can pass through. Some of the these objects include freezer bags, netting and clear plastic containers. We had great fun testing different objects! Please click here to see more...

Junior Infants Room 2: At School!

Room 2 have been very busy over the past month learning all about school. They had a mini-school in their classroom, where they played the role of Prinicpal, Teacher, Student and Secretary, and did a brilliant job of interviewing their school Secretary Karen, asking her clever questions about what her job in the school community is like.  They went on a ‘5 senses’ hunt around the school, investigating the smells, sights, sounds, textures and tastes to be found in the school building, and even made it into the staff-room! Room 2 have also been discussing the time, and learnt some new songs (‘This is the way we go to school‘ and ‘I went to school one morning…’), to help them order their day from morning to nighttime. They have also been learning lots of new skills to help them become great readers and writers, and can now give a procedure (a set of instructions) to a new girl starting school, on how to come into school in the morning. Well done Room 2, you are brilliant students, secretaries, principals, and teachers! For more photos of Room 2 busy at work and play, please see...

First Class Room 9: Clay Flower Pots

Spring has finally sprung! Did you know that the season of spring is now officially March, April and May. In times past we used to go by the ancient Celtic calendar when spring was February, March and April. But now according to Met Eireann spring is officially March, April and May. Spring has seen many of the bulbs we planted in winter spring up! There are beautiful hyacinths, daffodils and tulips in the school flower beds. Many thanks to Ms McCann for oganising the planting for the whole school. In Room 9 we ‘pinched’ clay pots and used pipe cleaners and egg cartons to make a beautiful floral arrangement! We hope you like the end results!   For more photos please click...

Junior Infants Room 2: Literacy Week and Seachtain Na Gaeilge

Room 2 had a great time celebrating Literacy Week and have become brilliant story tellers! They created their own wonderful mini-story books, making sure to include characters, a setting, a problem, solution and ending, and really enjoyed having the mums, dads, and First Class children come in and read stories to them. They re-enacted the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ in their puppet theatres, dressed up for World Book Day, and took part in a costume parade with all of their friends (and teachers!)  in Rooms 1 and 5. During Seachtain na Gaeilge the children made an extra effort to bí ag labhairt as Gaeilge (speaking Irish), and did a fantastic job of showing their families all the learning they have been doing in school trí Gaeilge on Lá Glás. As part of the week’s activities, they also printed shamrocks using apples, had a céilí in class, and were visited by Second Class children who taught them all about the Irish flag- can you remember what the three colours on the flag stand for? Maith sibh Seomra a dó, tá sibh ar fheabhas (you are wonderful) and míle buíochas (huge thanks) to all the parents and grandparents for taking such an active role in school activities over the last term. Happy holidays to all! For more photos of Room 2 at work and play please see...
