Principal: We’re Famous!

There is a very interesting article in today’s Irish Times. The article looks in detail at the Community National School model and how it can contribute to the Irish Education System. Our schools is heavily featured throughout the article. They have used the new name for the school which is great but it will take some time to get used to! Details on when we will be launching the new name officially will be ironed out soon. I took part in an hour long discussion with the journalist before Christmas. It was almost as intense as my interview with the Parent Association for the newsletter!!! Some of the comments look a bit random in the article as they were part of a much wider discussion but overall, we are happy with the piece. Please see the link below if you would like to read the article....

Senior Infants Room 4: Winter Concert

Room 4 worked very hard last week practising for our Winter Concert. We learnt some new songs, revised our new sounds and used our new Irish phrases to help us go shopping. Everyone had a job to do, some children had lines, some children showed us the actions to an Irish rhyme and some children showed everyone what we do in P.E. We hope that our audience enjoyed the concert. We had great fun! Please click here to see some more photos. I hope that everyone enjoys the break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in...

Junior Infants Room 1: Printing

Room 1 have been very busy creating beautiful pieces of art work using their hand prints and their finger prints this week. They created a giraffe linked to our story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ a reindeer as part of our winter art and fairy lights as part of our work on electricity and the dangers surrounding using electricity. The work that Room 1 has produced linked to printing is fantastic and Mrs Swan is so happy with all the new work displayed in her classroom. Well Done Room 1!   For more photos please click...

Principal: School Name Change

Hi all Great news! We got confirmation today from the Department of Education that our school’s name will change to ‘Citywest & Saggart Community National School’ in the near future. Some of the reasons for this change are: We were often mistaken for a Gaelscoil (all Irish speaking school) by many parents and teachers. We are a Community National School and therefore it is very appropriate for the communities we serve most to be reflected in our school name. The new name better reflects our ethos of innovation, inclusion and integration. All new Community National Schools under the DDLETB will be named after the area that they serve. There will be a period where we have somewhat of a dual identity. We will continue to have the name Citywest & Saggart CNS until later in the new year. However, it will start to be phased out in January and by September 2016, we will have fully changed over to the new name. The only exception to this will be our uniform. Children will continue to wear the uniforms with the ‘Citywest & Saggart CNS’ crest until the uniform providers finish their current stock. Younger siblings will also get to wear the ‘Citywest & Saggart CNS’ uniforms so that this change will not cost families any additional money. The staff are delighted with this change. We are fully confident that the great reputation the school has built up in the locality and beyond will transfer seamlessly to ‘Citywest & Saggart Community National School.’ Many thanks to the parents and staff who participated in our survey. It was great for the...

Principal: National Flag Ceremony

Hi everyone Our 1st and 2nd class children had a fantastic time at our ‘National Flag Ceremony’ yesterday. A lieutenant and a sargent from the Air Corps visited our school and Citywest ETNS to present us with our flag. They asked the children lots of questions about our Irish flag and the children answered brilliantly! They spoke to us about the significance of the flag and really got us excited about our shared identity – our Irish identity. They also taught us how we have to look after the flag when they left. They read out the ‘Irish Proclamation’ which set out the vision for the country. The Proclamation had a vision of peace, harmony and equality for all Irish citizens. It was really nice to see how this part of The Proclamation linked to our own school ethos. We look forward to writing our own proclamation very soon which will describe what we would like to see happen in Ireland over the next 100 years. The children all asked some really interesting questions and the members of the Air Corps were excellent and providing clear, understandable answers. We finished the ceremony by singing our National Anthem ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’. All of the children stood very straight with their hands by their sides during this song. The representatives of the Air Corps explained that they salute during the singing of the National Anthem. To see more pictures of our great morning, please click here....
